It was August of 1973, next to me was a young lady that I had been dating for three years. We were talking about a variety of things when out of the clear blue came a question I was definitely unprepared to answer. “John, do you love me?” she asked inquisitively. While we had been dating for three years, the “love” word had not yet been spoken.

A man asked his neighbor to “take care” of his dog while he was away on vacation. The neighbor agreed. When the man returned home, his dog was nowhere to be found. He ran next door to his neighbor and exclaimed, “Where’s my dog?” He received a puzzled look and a response, “I shot him. Baptists We Should Know: Isaac Backus, 1724–1806

Isaac Backus was born in 1724 to a Congregationalist family. He followed in that tradition and became a member of the congregational church during a time of controversy. The Half-Way Covenant, which allowed people to become members of the church without a salvation testimony, had split the Congregationalists. Backus’ family became convinced of the need for saved membership and joined the “New Light” faction.

Investing Time

In life there is nothing more consistent than the passing of time. We attempt to slow it down and even at times make it stand still, but it is undeterred, steadily marching onward. Benjamin Franklin said, “Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time; for that’s the stuff life is made of.” What on your "to-do" list will make it into eternity?

Being Spirit Filled

I am convinced more and more that whether we call it being filled with the Spirit, living the crucified life, dying to ourselves, demonstrating grace, or walking in the Spirit, it all comes down to the same thing—relying on the Spirit of God. It is important—no, it is essential—for us to learn to depend on the Holy Spirit, rather than on our own strength.

Making a Difference

With nearly seven billion people alive on planet earth, how can just one person possibly make a difference? With so many needs, so little time, and so few resources, where do you begin? The answer is found in the pages of the Word of God. The Bible says in Jude 22, “And of some have compassion, making a difference.” Spirit-filled Christians have been used by God to make a difference throughout the centuries. As Christians, we cannot afford to miss our opportunity to be used of God.
