John Gano was born in Hopewell, New Jersey in July of 1727. Gano’s father was a Presbyterian and a deeply religious man. With much personal study, Gano could not sway himself to accept sprinkling after studying the immersion of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. Because of his stance on doctrine he decided to unite with a Baptist church in Hopewell, New Jersey.

George Lofton was born in Missouri on Christmas day in 1839. He finished his education at Mercer University and intended to become a Methodist minister, but as he studied his New Testament, he was convinced of the scriptural correctness of Baptist views.

John Conant was the son of Ebenezer Conant, Jr., who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and a deacon in two Baptist churches. John was born in Massachusetts in 1773 and died in Vermont in 1856. As a very young boy, he felt the Lord working in his heart and expressed to others the fact that Christ in him was both the inspiring and controlling influence in his life.

Rufus Burleson was a man who was fixed with a purpose, full of courage, yet amiable and generous. At age sixteen he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized the following Sunday by William Holcombe. At age seventeen he went off to Nashville University to study law. The Lord spoke to his heart, and Burleson laid aside his aspirations in order to pursue a life of ministry.
