It is easy to look at our country and declare that we are abandoning our Christian roots, we are headed downhill, our best days are past. But there are a few men and women who, instead of condemning America, are asking God to change pockets of America through their lives. They are not politicians looking for a national audience. They are church planters being used of God to change a town or city one life at a time.

Planting a Church in Los Angeles

Pastor Sal Menjivar and the Los Angeles Baptist Church celebrate ten years of faith-filled ministry in the heart of Los Angeles. The light is still shining in downtown Los Angeles because of one man and his family who were willing to answer the call of God, to walk away from earthly prosperity, and to enter a vast mission field of spiritual need.

Grace Alone

In July 2004, Jason and Suzie Herring were blessed with their second son Josiah, and moved to Eagle, Idaho to plant a church. Four years later, they faced the greatest challenge of their lives—Josiah was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Pastor Herring tells of his family's tragedy, and the miraculous grace God gave them.

Planting Churches in Nicaragua

Dr. Bob Dayton has been used of God to make a difference in Central America. He brought a single light to a region and saw it multiplied over and over again.

Global Warning

Our task is clear, but our time is short. The eternal destiny of billions is dependent upon our obedience to God’s command to sound out a global warning. Who will go? The call a missionary hears is a curious thing to those who have not experienced it. How do missionaries know God wants them to go to the foreign field, and how do they know where God wants them to go?

As independent Baptists, we understand the need to plant churches. Our entire movement has historically revolved around missions and church planting. Our doctrinal position may be the glue that holds us together, but missions and church planting are the natural outcome of unity around doctrine. Independent Baptists don’t fellowship just to drink coffee and eat pie. We fellowship together as churches for the great purpose of sending forth laborers into the harvest fields of the world.

Planting Churches in the Philippines

Throughout the history of Christianity, various churches and individuals have been presented with opportunities to impact the generation in which they lived. Many have taken advantage of those open doors and have been used of God to bring millions into the Kingdom. Others, through lack of faith or leadership, have missed great opportunities.

Reaching the Coast for Christ

Stephen Chappell, pastor of Coastline Baptist Church, knew God was moving him to plant a church in California. In June of 1998, Stephen Chappell, his wife, and their two young daughters packed their belongings and moved across the country to San Diego County. There were no people, no buildings, and no salary—just a heart of faith and the call of God.

Restoration

They were running out of options. The congregation of the Community Baptist Church of South Fontana, California, was without a pastor. For years they sang the old hymns, they prayed together, they read from the Scriptures, they managed to pay the bills, but their numbers were dwindling. Unless God opened a door, Community Baptist Church would have to close its doors.

The Baptist Voice
